The Upfield Urban Forest is a volunteer community group dedicated to greening and improving one of the key sustainable transport corridors in Melbourne's north - the Upfield train line. Along the 9km from Jewel Station to Fawkner Station, residents have developed and cultivated track side spaces, neighbouring streets verges, bike path verges, and storm water reserves into an eclectic mix of decorative plants, native grasses and bushes, fruit and shade trees, and small community areas - seats, Little Libraries, and sensory walks.
One of these areas is the community garden at the end of Charles St North Coburg where the bike path crosses the train line. This was vacant land and a regular rubbish dump site on the edge of an industrial area. It has been transformed.
